The Philip Ambler painting in the background was specially commissioned and shows an auction in progress at Corbitts. Closer inspection reveals some interesting bidders such as Elvis Presley, Guy Fawkes, and Sunderland and Newcastle United supporters sitting together in philatelic harmony!

Will philately benefit from Northern Ireland’s peace dividend?
By Chad Neighbor
DEALERS often look across the 'pond' to North America and its strong stamp markets, and across the Channel to Europe’s diverse markets, but few look across the Irish Sea to Ireland.
The reasons are many, the chief ones being the decades of Troubles in Northern Ireland and the relatively small size of the Irish economy and philatelic market.
With peace in Northern Ireland as former arch-enemies sit down together and form a government, and the booming of the Celtic Tiger economy, the potential for new opportunities should theoretically be considerable.
And so it was that the entire staff and assets of Chad Neighbor Philately – myself, wife, four Siberian huskies, and some 200 pounds of mainly postal history and postcard stock – were nestled in our camper van one Friday lunchtime in March on the dock at Stranraer awaiting the Stena sailing to Belfast ...

Germany still top in Europe for stamp shops
IN his 15th and final report as president of the APHV, Carl-Heinz Schulz informed the AGM on March 18 in Wiesbaden that he has accepted the post of treasurer of IFSDA and that he will continue as president of ESDA ... Germany still maintains a distant top position in Europe with 200 stamp shops.

Raising the profile at the Tate
MANY non-collectors still regard the picture postcard as merely something to be bought and posted while on holiday - the comic seaside postcard readily comes to mind in Britain. The vast social history interest in so many cards is largely ignored by the general public ... A new exhibition will be opening at Tate Britain (the former Tate Gallery) in London on May 22 2007 and run until September 2 2007. The exhibition will feature the history of photography and there will be examples of many celebrated British photographers on view. There will also be a large number of postcards displayed showing their importance in the history of photography and how they have been underrated until relatively recently ...

Open season on stamp collectors!
This month I'm concluding my preview of this year's British stamp programme which was unveiled at the Royal Mail Trade Briefing on March 1 2007 during Stampex. Unfortunately, embargo restrictions prevent any illustrations being shown. The first six months' issues of 2007 were previewed in the April PE.

Over and out
And there we have it, the balance of the issues for 2007. If you ask my opinion of the content, with a few exceptions it would be excellent – most of the designs are of a very high quality, which, if given the appropriate spotlight are likely to appeal to the large majority of collectors ... However, this is completely overshadowed by the extraordinary number of issues. By the year’s end, unless there are any unexpected last minute additions, we will have had 12 stamp issues containing a total of 82 stamps and a further eight miniature sheets containing another 38 stamps ... The sad truth that we all have to face is that it seems that open season has been declared on stamp collecting.

Happy birthday 'Coathanger'!
THE one mint stamp nearly every collector of Australia lacks is the 5/- 1932 Sydney Harbour Bridge. It has always been Australia's 'glamour' stamp. Not nearly as pricey as most mint bicolour 'Roos, but far more keenly sought in my experience, with the 'Five Bob Bridge' on nearly every wants list ... The stamp issue turned 75 years old on March 14 2007. I walked over the affectionately named 'Coathanger' on the real anniversary March 19 - along with 300,000 other folks.
